There are many fields of geography: human, physical, world, economic, political – to name a few. Ocean geography concerns the big blue waters of our planet Earth. A whopping 71% of the Earth’s surface is made up of water, and our oceans hold around 96.5% of all Earth’s water. Water shows up in other forms as rivers, lakes, glaciers, ice caps, and vapor. It is also in the soil and deep down in aquifers. We really are “The Blue Planet”, as dubbed by the 2001 British nature documentary produced by the BBC.
The oceans of Earth contain over 225,000 different species. That being said, scientists also estimate that we have only classified about 9% of living ocean species. It is utterly impossible to know just how many different species there really are in our oceans because they are vast. In fact, scientists know more about the surface of the moon than they do about our oceans here at home. Humans have and forever will be fascinated with the geography of our world’s waters.
